Abstract

Is life worth living if I become critically injured and disabled in the line of duty? This is a question we have been asked time and time again. There is life after being a police officer regardless of retirement, illness, or injury. It lies in the mindset and coping skills we have when faced with adversity and struggles. We set ourselves up for failure if we do not plan for the “what if’s” of law enforcement with those closest to us. They are the ones left with the responsibility to care for us if we are injured. The warrior mindset is not only necessary for surviving while being an officer, but it is also an imperative tool to teach our spouses if they are to care for us should we become catastrophically injured. Too often we do not prepare for the worst but if we take the time to help our spouses understand us it sets us up for success versus failure.
