Abstract

On January 2, 2012, Officer Frank Mackall of the Savage, Minnesota police department, lost
control of his squad car while responding to a call. Unresponsive and clinging to life, he was
found moments later by his partner. As Officer Mackall was airlifted to a trauma hospital, his
wife and three children were notified of his accident. Officer Mackall spent the next 84 days in
the hospital recovering from a severe head injury, which limited his ability to communicate,
walk, eat, and do everyday activities for himself.
